Research and Conservation

Alvaro is currently involved in various projects, foremost of which is the description of a possible new Storm-Petrel in the waters of southern Chile. This project involves a large team of contributors, headed by seabird expert Peter Harrison. The description of the new species is but the first part of a larger investigation into the relationships of southern storm petrels, as well as determining where this species breeds, how many of them there are and the conservation status of the species.

Other ongoing projects on the birds of the southern cone of South America include an upcoming field guide to the birds of Patagonia, as well as the analysis of vocal information, and eventual publication of that information, which may bear on the species status of several field recognizable forms in Chile.
